The Prophets (Al-Anbiyâ)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

1Closer and closer to mankind comes their reckoning: yet they heed not and they turn away.

2Never comes aught to them of a renewed message from their Lord but they listen to it as in jest

3Their hearts toying as with trifles. The wrongdoers conceal their private counsels saying “Is he more than a man like yourselves? Will you go to witchcraft with your eyes open?”1

4Say: “My Lord knows every word in the heavens and the earth: He is the One that hears and knows all things.”

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

1Iqutaraba li nasi hisabuhum wa hum fi gafulatin muriddun.

2Ma yatihim min zikurin mi rabbihim muhudasin illa sutamauhu wa hum yaluabuna.

3Lahiyatan qulubuhum wa asaru najuwa lazina tualamu halu haza illa basarun afatatuna sihura wa antum tubussiruna.

4Qala rabbi yalamul qaula fi samai walarddi wa huwa samiul alimu.

1. When Muhammad claimed to be a prophet, he was not accepted by his people, several assassination attempts were made on his life but somehow he was saved from them all. Since he could not killed, they people wondered if he had witchcraft, which justified their secret plots to kill him.

[Commentary continues below.]

5“No,” they say “these are medleys of dreams! nay he forged it! nay he is a poet! Let him then bring us a sign like the ones that were sent to those of old!”

6As to those before them, not one of the populations which We destroyed believed: will these believe?

7And before you also the apostles we sent were but men to whom We granted inspiration: if you realize this not ask of those who possess the message.2

8And did We give them bodies that ate no food nor were they exempt from death.

9In the end We fulfilled to them Our promise and We saved them and those whom We pleased but We destroyed those who transgressed beyond bounds.

10We have revealed for you a book in which is a message for you: will you not then understand?

5Balu qaluu addugasu ahula min bali futarahu balu huwa sairu faluyatina bi ayatin kama urusilal awaluna.

9Summa suadaqunahumu luwauda faanujainahum wa man nasau wa ahulakunal musurifina.

10Laqadu anuzaluna ilaikum kitaban fihi zikurukum afala tauqiluna.

2. Allah claims the Superiority of the Bible and its people by making a point of reference and verification for the Qur’anic revelation (if ye realize this not ask of those who possess the Message), the people of the Book, the Jews and the Christians.

[Commentary continues below.]

11How many were the populations we utterly destroyed because of their iniquities setting up in their places other peoples!

12Yet when they felt Our punishment, behold, they flee from it.

13Flee not but return to the good things of this life which were given you and to your homes in order that you may be called to account.

14They said: “Ah! woe to us! We were indeed wrongdoers!”

15And that cry of theirs ceased not till We made them as a field that is mown, as ashes silent and quenched.

16And not for sport did We create the heavens and the earth and all that is between!

17If it had been Our wish to take a pastime, We should surely have taken it from the things nearest to Us, if We would do that!

11Wa kamu qasuamuna min qaruyatin kanatu ztulimatan wa anusana badaha qauman aharina.

[Commentary continues below.]

18No, We hurl the truth against falsehood and it knocks out its brain and behold falsehood perishes! Ah! woe be to you for the things you ascribe.

19To Him belong all in the heavens and on earth: even those who are in His presence are not too proud to serve Him, nor are they weary:

20They celebrate His praises night and day, nor do they ever flag or intermit.

21Or have they taken gods from the earth who can raise the dead?3

22If there were in the heavens and the earth other gods besides Allah there would have been confusion in both! But glory to Allah, the Lord of the throne: He is above what they attribute to Him!

23He cannot be questioned for His acts but they will be questioned for theirs.

18Balu naquzifu bil haqqi allal batili fayadumauhu fa iza huwa zahiqu wa lakumul wailu mima tasifuna.

3. Please read the Deity of Jesus under “Study Helps” and you will find out that He raised the dead according to Qur’an 3:49.

[Commentary continues below.]

24Or have they taken for worship gods besides Him? Say “Bring your convincing proof: this is the message of those with me and the message of those before me.” But most of them know not the truth and so turn away.

25And not an apostle did We send before you without this inspiration sent by Us to him: that there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve Me.

26And they say: “the most gracious has begotten offspring.” Glory to Him! they are servants raised to honor.

27They speak not before He speaks and they act by His command.4

28He knows what is before them and what is behind them and they offer no intercession except for those who are acceptable and they stand in awe and reverence of Him.

24Ami tahazu min dunihi alihatan qulu hatu buruhanakum haza zikuru man maiya wa zikuru man qahuli bu akusaruhum la yalamunal haqa fahum muuridduna.

25Wa ma arusaluna min qabulika mi rasulin illa nuhi ilaihi annahu la ilaha illa anna fabuduni.

4. There is the clue to the Islamic teachings that prophets are sinless, if you ever needed one. The argument is simple: prophets do not err in words or deeds because they only follow what is revealed to them in speech and in deed. The confusion therefore comes when Allah asks a prophet like Muhammad to confess his sins: (Qur’an 40:55: ask forgiveness for thy faults; Qur’an 47:19: ask forgiveness for your sin; 48:2;  That Allah may forgive you your sins).

He admits to confessing his sins according to Fiqh-us-Sunnah 1.132a, reported by Abu Hurairah:

“When the Prophet, upon whom be peace, made the opening takbir, he would be quiet for a little while before his recitation. I asked him, ‘O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, why are you quiet between the (opening) takbir and your recitation? What do you say (at that time)?’ He said, ‘I say, O Allah, make the distance between me and my sins as far as you have made the distance between the East and the West. O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, purify me from my sins by snow, rain and hail.”

(Related by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, an-Nasa’I and Ibn Majah.)

Also Ali reported that when the Prophet stood for prayer, he would make the takbir and then say, I have wronged my soul and You are aware of my sins, so forgive all of my sins. No one forgives sins save You. Guide me to the best character. No one can guide to the best of that save You. So, the question is how fair is it for Allah to ask a prophet who only follows Allah’s orders to confess his sins?

29And if any of them should say “I am a god besides Him” such a god We should reward with hell: thus do We reward those who do wrong.

30Do not the unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together before We clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?5

31And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm lest it should shake with them and We have made therein broad highways for them to pass through: that they may receive guidance.

32And We have made the heavens as a well guarded canopy: Yet do they turn away from the signs which these things point to!

29Wa man yaqulu minuhum inni ilahun min dunihi fazalika najuzihi jahannama kazalika najuzi tualimina.

30Awalam yara lazina kafaru anna samawati walardua kanata ratuqan fafataqunahuma wa jaaluna minal mai kulla saiin hayin afala yuminuna.

32Wa jaaluna samaa saqufan mahufuutuan wa hum anayatiha muridduuna.

5. With exception of Adam and Eve, God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind, everything else was called into being by God. It is like saying “kun fayaku_n(u)” Be and it is. Even so God “Let there be and all things besides came into being. To say that every living thing was made from water exposes Allah as an imposter god.

[Commentary continues below.]

33And it is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon: all swim along each in its rounded course.

34And We granted not to any man before you permanent life: if then you should die, would they live permanently?

35Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial: to Us must you return.6

36When the unbelievers see you, they treat you not except with ridicule. “Is this the one who talks of your gods? And they blaspheme at the mention of the most gracious!

37Man is a creature of haste: soon will I show you My signs: then you will not ask Me to hasten them!

38And they say: “When will this promise come to pass if you are telling the truth?”

33Wa huwa lazi halaqa laila wa nahara wa samusa walu qamaru kullun fi falakin yasubahuna.

6. Enoch did not taste death (Genesis 5:22), and Elijah did not taste death (2 Kings 2:11), that means not every soul tasted death, that has made Allah not so sure of the facts.

[Commentary continues below.]

39If only the unbelievers knew when they will not be able to ward off the fire from their faces nor yet from their backs and when no help can reach them!

40Nay, it may come to them all of a sudden and confound them: no power will they have then to avert it nor will they get respite.

41And mocked were apostles before you; but their scoffers were hemmed in by the thing that they mocked.

42Say “Who can keep you safe by night and by day from the Wrath of the most gracious?” Yet they turn away from the mention of their Lord.

39Lau yalamu lazina kafaru hina la yakufuna an wujuhihimu nara wa la an ttuhurihim wa lahum yunusuaruna.

43Or have they gods that can guard them from Us? They have no power to aid themselves nor can they be defended from Us.

44No, We gave the good things of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them; see they not that we gradually reduce the land from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will win?7

45Say “I do but warn you according to revelation”: but the deaf will not hear the call when they are warned!

46And if but a breath of the wrath of your Lord touch them, they will then say “Woe to us! we did wrong indeed!”

43Amulahum alihatun tamunauhum min dunina la yasutatiuna nasura anufusihim wa lahum minna yussuhabuna.

46Wa lain ma satuhum nafuhatum min azabi rabbika layaquluna ya wailana inna kuna tualimina.

7. “The gradual reduction of land” has to do with the possession of the lands of the unbelievers after they are defeated by the Muslims in wars and invasions. As the Muslims became powerful, they took possession of lands that belonged to the non-Muslims, a reserve case will be Israel’s possession of the Golan Heights and the West Bank after gaining victory over Muslims.

[Commentary continues below.]

47And We shall set up scales of justice for the day of judgment so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least. And if there be the weight of a mustard seed We will bring it to account: and enough are We to take account.

48And in the past We granted to Moses and Aaron the criterion and a light and a message for those who would do right

49Those who fear their Lord in their most secret thoughts and who hold the hour in awe.

50And this is a blessed message which We have sent down: will you then reject it?

51And We bestowed before on Abraham his rectitude of conduct and well were We acquainted with him.

52Behold! he said to his father and his people “What are these images to which you are devoted to?”8

53They said “We found our father worshiping them.”

54He said “Indeed you have been in manifest error, you and your fathers.”

55They said “Have you brought us the truth or are you one of those who jest?”

56He said “No, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth He who created them, and I am a witness to this.

57And by Allah I have a plan for your idols after you go away and turn your backs”...

58So he broke them to pieces, all but the biggest of them that they might turn to it.9

59They said “Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!”

60They said “We heard a youth talk of them: he is called Abraham.”

9. Abraham loved life and would lie to save his neck than to boldly proclaim that he would destroy the community gods, knowing that such a revelation if carried out could spell his death. He lied to Abimelech (Genesis 20:1-11) for fear of death about his relationship with Sarai because of how beautiful she was,. He feared the people would kill him and take his wife, so he said that she was his sister which was a half truth, and half truth is a lie.

[Commentary continues below.]

61They said “Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may bear witness:”

62They said “Are you the one that did this with our gods, O Abraham?”

63He said: “Nay, this was done by this, their biggest one! Ask them if they can speak intelligently!”

64So they turned to themselves and said “Surely you are the ones in the wrong!”

65Then were they confounded with shame: they said “You know full well that these do not speak!”

66He said “Do you then worship besides Allah things that can neither be of any good to you nor do you harm?

67“Fie upon you and upon the things that you worship besides Allah! have you no sense?”

68They said “Burn him and protect your gods if you do anything at all!”

69. We said “O fire! be cool and a means of safety for Abraham!”

70And then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most!

71And We delivered him and Lut to the land which We have blessed for the nations.

72And We bestowed on him Isaac and as an additional gift, Jacob;10 and We made righteous men of every one of them.11

73And We made them leaders guiding men by Our command and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practice regular charity; and they constantly served Us.

10. In talking about the progeny of Abraham, the Qur’an always leaves out the children of Keturah and Esau, Genesis 25:1-2 tells of the children of Keturah, the wife that Abraham took after the death of Sarah: Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

11. Genesis 25:25-29 reveals that Esau was the senior brother of Jacob, although the Qur’an makes no mention of him:

The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.

74And to Lut too we gave judgment and knowledge and We saved him from the town which practiced abominations: truly they were a people given to evil, a rebellious people.

75And We admitted him to Our mercy: for he was one of the righteous.

76And Noah when he cried to Us before: We listened to his prayer and delivered him and his family from great distress.

77We helped him against people who rejected Our signs: truly they were a people given to evil: so We drowned them all together.

78And remember David and Solomon when they gave judgment in the matter of the field into which the sheep of certain people had strayed by night: We did witness their judgment.

79To Solomon We inspired with understanding of the matter: to each We gave judgment and knowledge; it was Our power that made the hills and the birds celebrate Our praises with David: it was We who did these things.12

80And it was We who taught him the making of coats of mail for your benefit, to guard you from each others violence: will you then be grateful?

81And the violent wind flow for Solomon to his order, to the land which We had blessed: for We do know all things.

82And of the evil ones were some who dived for him and did other work besides; and it was

78Wa Dawuda wa Sulaimana izu yahukumani fil harusi izu nafasatu fihi ganamu l qaumi wa kunna lihukumihim sahidina.

12. Too many hands spoil the soup, it is the case with the Qur’an, it was inspired by a group of deities, hence the stories even within the Qur’an itself do not agree. Here is a typical example.

the test of Solomon’s wisdom was that the two prostitutes who both had children; the one prostitute's child died while the other’s lived. The one whose child died stole the live baby, which only the ingenious wisdom of Solomon could detect (I kings 3:15-28).

David did no such thing. The closest to this story is when the prophet Nathan came to David and told him the story of the rich man who had many sheep, but went and took the only sheep a poor man had to entertain his visitors (2 Samuel 12: 1-13). The story told by Allah is not in agreement with the known historical record of the lives of David and Solomon.

The identity of the third man is not certain. The translators of the edition of the Qur’an published as The Bible Quran says he is Isaiah; Yusuf Ali thinks that he is Ezekiel. From George Sale, a host of others are mentioned, including Elias, Joshua, Zechariah and a son of Job. In any case, we cannot ascertain his true identity, therefore your guess may be as good as mine.

83We Who guarded them. And Job when he cried to his Lord “Truly distress has seized me but You are the most merciful of those that are merciful.”

84So We listened to him: We removed the distress that was on him and We restored his people to him and doubled their number as a grace from Ourselves and a thing for commemoration for all who serve Us.

85And (remember) Isma'il, Idris, and Zul-kifl, all (men) of constancy and patience;

86And we admitted them to Our mercy: for they were of the righteous ones.

87And remember Zun-nun, when he departed in wrath: he imagined that We had no power over him! But he cried through the depths of darkness “There is no god but You, Glory to You, I was indeed wrong.”13

88So We listened to him: and delivered him from distress: and thus do We deliver those who have faith.

89And Zakariya when he cried to his Lord: “O my Lord! leave me not without offspring though You are the best of inheritors.

90So We listened to him: and We granted him Yahya: We cured his wife for him. These three were ever quick in emulation in good works: they used to call on Us with love and reverence and humble themselves before Us.

97Then will the true promise draw nigh: then behold! the eyes of the unbelievers will fixedly stare in horror: “Ah! woe to us! we were indeed heedless of this; nay, we truly did wrong!”

98Verily, you and the gods that you worship besides Allah are fuel for hell! To it will you come!14

99If these had been gods, they would not have got there! But each one will abide therein.

100There sobbing will be their lot nor will they there hear anything else.

101Those for whom the good from Us has gone before will be removed far therefrom.

102Not the slightest sound will they hear of hell: what their souls desired, in that will they dwell.

14. According to the Muslims Christians worship Jesus and Mary as gods besides Allah, according to this passage therefore, both Jesus and Mary and all those who worship them will be fuel for the fire. And if Jesus and Mary cannot go to Hell because of their piety, then Allah cannot be the One he claims to be, he has not power to cast anyone into Hell.

103The great terror will bring them no grief: but the angels will meet them: “This is your day that you were promised.”

104The day that we roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up for books, even as We produced the first creation, so We shall produce a new one: a promise We have undertaken: truly shall We fulfill it.

105And before this We wrote in the Psalms after the message given to Moses: My servants, the righteous shall inherit the earth.”

106Verily, in it is a Message for people who would worship Allah.

107And We sent you not but as a mercy for all creatures.

108Say: “What has come to me by inspiration is that your Allah is One Allah: will you therefore bow to His Will?”

103La yahuzunuhumu lufazaul akubaru wa tatalaqahumul malaikatu haza yaumukumu lazi kuntum tuaduna.

104Yauma nattuwi sama a katuai sijilli lilkutubu kama badauna an wala khaluqin nuiyuduhu wa udan alaina inna kunna failina.

105Wa laqadu katabuna fi zaburi min badi zikuri anna lardua yarisuha ibadiya sualihuna.

106Inna fi haza labalagal liqaumin abidina.

107Wa ma arusalunaka illa rahumatan lilalamina.

108Qulu innama yuha ilayya annama illahukum illahun wahidun fahalu antum muslimuna.

109But if they turn back say: “I have proclaimed the message to you all alike and in truth; but I know not whether that which you are promised is near or far.

110“It is He who knows what is open in speech and what you hide.

111“And I know not but that it may be a trial for you and a grant of livelihood for a time.

112Say: “O my Lord! You judge in truth!” “Our Lord most gracious is the One whose assistance should be sought against the blasphemies you utter!”

109Fa in tawa lau faqulu azanutukum alla sawain wa in aduri aqaribun am baidun ma tuaduna.

110Innahu yalamul jahura minal qauli wa yalamu ma takutumun.

111Wa in aduri laallahu fitunatul lakum wa mataun illa hinin.

112Qala rabbihukum bil haqu wa rabbuna rahumanul musutaanu alla ma tassifuna.
