The Romans (ArRűm)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

1A.L.M.

2The Roman Empire has been defeated.

3In a land close by; but they after this defeat of theirs will soon be victorious1

4Within a few years. With Allah is the decision in the past and in the future: on that day shall the believers rejoice

5With the help of Allah. He helps whom He will and He is exalted in might, most merciful.

6The promise of Allah. Never does Allah depart from His promise: but most men understand not.

7They know but the outer things in the life of this world: but of the end of things they are heedless.

1. This is hailed by Muslims as a convincing proof towards Muhammad’s prophethood. This incident may have happened around 615 A.D. According to traditions, the Romans or Greeks as claimed by others were defeated by Persia and Jerusalem was taken. Since the Christians boasted of a believe in an all powerful God, the pagan Arabs surmised that they could also defeat Muhammad who likewise believed in an all powerful God. Thus they rejoiced and awaited the day when Islam would fall.

Muhammad then predicted that the Christians will be victorious again, which according to Yusuf Ali occurred in 622 at the battle of Issus seven years later, around which time the Meccans were also defeated at the battle of Badr.

This, according to the Muslims legitimizes Muhammad claim to prophethood. However, this is more of a military prediction than a prophecy. It is just like saying that were American President Bill Clinton to run again for office he would win the elections hands down.

Any analytical thinker could make such prediction and he would be right. Muhammad, having analyzed the situation came up with the result of his analysis and he was right. But this does not make him a prophet.

2. The tables did indeed turn and the Muslims rejoiced over the fact the pagans have been defeated both by the Christians and the Muslims.

8Do they not reflect in their own minds? Not but for just ends and for a term appointed did Allah create the heavens and the earth and all between them: yet are there truly many among men who deny the meeting with their Lord at the resurrection!

9Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their apostles with clear signs which they rejected to their own destruction: it was not Allah who wronged them but they wronged their own souls.

10In the long run, evil in the extreme will be the end of those who do evil; for that they rejected the signs of Allah and held them up to ridicule.

11It is Allah who begins the process of creation; then repeats it; then you shall be brought back to Him.

12And on the day that the hour will be established, the guilty will be struck dumb with despair.

13And no intercessor will they have among their “partners” and they will reject their “partners.”

14And on the day that the hour will be established, that day shall all men be sorted out.

15Then those who have believed and worked righteous deeds shall be made happy in a mead of delight.

16And those who have rejected faith and falsely denied Our signs and the meeting of the hereafter such shall be brought forth to punishment.

17So give glory to Allah when you reach eventide and when you rise in the morning;

18And to Him be praise in the heavens and on earth; and in the late afternoon and when the day begins to decline.

19It is He who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living and who gives life to the earth after it is dead: and thus shall you be brought out from the dead.

20And among His signs is this, that He created you from dust; and then behold, you are men scattered far and wide!

21And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may dwell in tranquility with them and He has put love and mercy between your hearts; verily, in that are signs for those who reflect.

22And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the variations in your languages and your colors: verily, in that are signs for those who know.3

23And among His signs is the sleep that you take by night and by day and the quest that you make for livelihood out of His bounty: verily, in that are signs for those who hearken.

3. Muslims believe that the Qur’an in Arabic cannot be translated, yet they claim that Islam is a universal religion. If variations in languages belong to Allah, how is it that the Qur’an is only recited in Arabic during worship? In fact, no other language is acceptable in worship besides Arabic. On the other hand, Christianity is a universal religion, hence, its Scriptures are translated into many, many languages. One is allowed to worship God in ones own tongue, herein lies the difference in the two religions and their claims to universality.

[Commentary continues below.]

24And among His signs He shows you the lightning by way both of fear and of hope and He sends down rain from the sky and with it gives life to the earth after it is dead: verily, in that are signs for those who are wise.

25And among His signs is this, that heaven and earth stand by His command: then when He calls you by a single call from the earth, behold you come forth.

26To Him belongs every being that is in the heavens and on earth: all are devoutly obedient to Him.

27And it is He who begins creation; then repeats it; and for Him it is most easy. To Him belongs the loftiest similitude in the heavens and the earth: for He is exalted in might, full of wisdom.

28He does propound to you a similitude from your own experience: do you have partners among those whom your right hands possess to share as equals in the wealth We have bestowed on you? Do you fear them as you fear each other? Thus do We explain the signs in detail to a people that understand.

29Nay, the wrongdoers follow their own lusts being devoid of knowledge. But who will guide those whom Allah leaves astray? To them there will be no helpers.4

4. This is the Islamic doctrine of predestination, in actual fact, it is “Fatalism” which means that no one can change his station in life unless otherwise predisposed. That is to say that if you were created a murderer, a murderer you would be, if you were created a thief, then a thief you w would be. This is what the Hadith has to say regarding adultery and “Fatalism”. Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.609 narrated by Ibn Abbas; “... ‘Allah has written for the son of Adam his inevitable share of adultery whether he is aware of it or not:...” Death is inevitable, but adultery, inevitable? What sins can then be condemned in the religion of Islam. Likewise are those for hell and heaven, it has been decreed and they can do nothing about them.

[Commentary continues below.]

30So set your face steadily and truly to the faith: Establish Allah’s handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made mankind: no change let there be in the work wrought by Allah: that is the standard religion: but most among mankind understand not.5

31Turn back in repentance to Him and fear Him: establish regular prayers and be not among those who join gods with Allah,6

32Those who split up their religion and become sects, each party rejoicing in that which is with itself!7

33And when trouble touches men they cry to their Lord, turning back to Him in repentance: but when He gives them a taste of mercy as from Himself, behold, some of them pay part worship to other gods besides their Lord.

34To show their ingratitude for the favors We have bestowed on them! Then enjoy your brief day; but soon will you know your folly.

5. The standard religion is that which portrays God in His Holiness and as absolutely Moral. Thus mankind was created, to reflect the image of the Most High God. In Matthew 5:48, we are told to be perfect, even as our Father which is in heaven is perfect. However, reading a passage like verse 29 destroys that basis.

6. How then does repentance work in this religion? Not forsaking the articles of the Pillars of Islam is true repentance for the Muslim. Besides this, a Muslim can have as many wives as he can support, so long as he keeps the practice of praying five times a day, making the confession that there is no god but Allah, giving to charity, fasting one month in a year, making the pilgrimage to Mecca and contributing to Jihad. Nothing else can take the place of these, and one who does these is truly repented.

Not so in Christianity. Repentance is forsaking sin in any shape or form and abiding by the Word of God. Here are the words of Christ to that effect in John 15:7-8:

If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you can ask for anything you want, and it will be yours. This is how my Father is glorified, when you produce a lot of fruit and prove to be my disciples.

7. Islam is against sectarianism, yet, it is itself a pseudo Judeo-Christian religion, taking from Judaism and Christianity and making it exclusively Islam. It claims that Moses spoke about Muhammad (Qur’an 11:17), that Jesus spoke about the coming of Ahmed (Muhammad) (Qur’an 61:6). Therefore he takes some of his teaching from Moses and others from Jesus, however misapplied, and from these you have Islam. In this light therefore it becomes intriguing that Muhammad would say that his brand of Islam is the only true religion. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 171 narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr:

“Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There will befall my Ummah exactly (all those) evils which befell the people of Isra’il, so much so that if there was one amongst them who openly committed fornication with his mother there will be among my Ummah one who will do that, and if the people of Isra’il were fragmented into seventy-two sects my Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Hell Fire except one sect. They (the Companions) said: Allah’s Messenger, which is that? Whereupon he said: It is one to which I and my companions belong.”

Today there are over one thousand sects within Islam all over the world. These sects came about mostly as disagreements between scholars and Imams became more and more aggressive and intolerable. Such as we find in Judaism and Christianity. Other times apostate charismatic figures, unwilling to conform to orthodoxy splinters off and form their own sects. However, the true and standard religion is that which holds the morality of God the highest and promotes the characteristics of God such as; Love, Forgiveness, Peace, Justice, Mercy, Faithfulness, Longsuffering, Righteousness, and so on and so forth.

35Or have We sent down authority to them which points out to them the things to which they pay part worship?

36And when We give men a taste of mercy, they exult thereat: and when some evil afflicts them because of what their hands have sent forth, behold they are in despair!

37See they not that Allah enlarges the provision and restricts it to whomsoever He pleases? Verily, in that are signs for those who believe.

38So give what is due to kindred, the needy, and the wayfarer. That is best for those who seek the countenance of Allah and it is they who will prosper.

[Commentary continues below.]

39And that which you lay out for increase through the property of other people will have no increase with Allah: but that which you lay out for charity seeking the countenance of Allah will increase: it is these who will get a recompense multiplied.

40It is Allah Who has created you: further He has provided for your sustenance; then He will cause you to die; and again He will give you life. Are there any of your partners who can do any single one of these things? Glory to Him! and high is He above the partners they attribute to Him!

41Mischief has appeared on land and sea because of the meet that the hands of men have earned, that Allah may give them a taste of some of their deeds: in order that they may turn back from evil.

8. Muslims accentuate that Jesus in not God, therefore, Christians are in error to claim such for Him. Consequently He becomes One partnered with God and therefore false. The above passage is making an exclusive claim to what only God can do, give life to the dead, a deed which Jesus did time and again, even the Qur’an testifies to that fact (Qur’an 3:49, 5:110). Yet Muhammad calls such unjust. Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.648 narrated by Abu Huraira:

I heard the Prophet saying, “Allah said, ‘Who are most unjust than those who try to create something like My creation? I challenge them to create even a smallest ant, a wheat grain or a barley grain.’

According to the Qur’an, Jesus created; therefore, He is God. But Muhammad says He is most unjust. Whose testimony would you believe?

42Say: “Travel through the earth and see what was the end of those before you: most of them worshiped others besides Allah.”

43But set your face to the right religion before there come from Allah the day which there is no chance of averting: on that day shall men be divided in two.

44Those who reject faith will suffer from that rejection: and those who work righteousness will spread their couch for themselves in heaven:

45That He may reward those who believe and work righteous deeds out of His bounty: for He loves not those who reject faith.

42Qul siru fil ardi fanzuru kaifa kana aqibatul lazina min qabl kana aksaruhum musrikin

43Fa aqim wajhaka lid dinil qay yimi min qabli ay yatiya yaumul la marad da lahu minal lahi yauma iziy yasad daun

44Man kafara faalaihi kufruh wa man amila salihan fali anfusihim yamhadun

45Liyajziyal lazina amanu wa amilus salihati min fadlih in nahu la yuhib bul kafirin

46And among His signs is this, that He sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, giving you a taste of His mercy, that the ships may sail by His command and that you may seek of His bounty: in order that you may be grateful.

47And We did indeed send before you apostles to their respective peoples and they came to them with clear signs: then to those who transgressed We meted out retribution: and it was due from us to aid those who believed.

46Wa min ayatihi ay yursilar riyaha mubas siratiw wa liyuzqakum mir rahmatihi wa litajriyal fulku bi amrihi wa litabtagu min fadlihi wa laal lakum taskurun

47Wa laqad arsalna min qablika rusulan ila qaumihim faja uhum bil bay yinati fantaqamna minal lazina ajramu wa kana haq qan alaina nasrul muminin

48It is Allah who sends the winds and they raise the clouds: then does He spread them in the sky as He wills and break them into fragments until you see rain drops issue from the midst thereof, then when He has made them reach such of his servants as He wills, behold, they rejoice!

49And even though before they received the rain just before this, they were dumb with despair!

50Then contemplate the memorials of Allah’s mercy! How He gives life to the earth after its death: verily, the same will give life to the men who are dead: for He has power over all things.

51And if We send a wind from which they see their tilth turn yellow, behold, they become thereafter ungrateful unbelievers!

52So verily, you cannot make the dead to hear nor can you make the deaf to hear the call when they show their backs and turn away.

48Allahul lazi yursilur riyaha fatutsiru sahaban fayabsutuhu fis samai kaifa yasyau wa yajaluhu kisafan fataral waqda yahruju min hilalih fa iza ashaba bihi may yasya umin ibadihi iza hum yastabsirun

51Wa la in arsalna rihan fara auhu musfar ral lazal lu min badihi yakfurun

52Fa innaka la tusmiul mauta wa la tusmius sum mad dua a iza wallau mudbirin

53And can you lead back the blind from their straying: only those will you make to hear who believe in Our signs and submit.

54It is Allah who created you in a state of helpless weakness, then gave you strength after weakness, then after strength give you weakness, and a hoary head: He creates as He wills and it is He who has all knowledge and power.

55And on the day that the hour of reckoning will be established, the transgressors will swear that they tarried not but an hour: thus were they used to being deluded!

56And those endued with knowledge and faith will say: “Indeed you did tarry within Allah’s decree to the day of resurrection and this is the day of resurrection: but you were not aware!”

53Wa ma anta bihadil umyi an dalatihim in tusmiu il la may yuminu bi ayatina fahum muslimun

54Alahul lazi halaqakum min dufin sum ma jaala min badi dafin quw watan sum ma jaala min badi quw watin dafan wasai batan yahluku ma yasya u wahuwal alimul qadir

56Wa qalal lazina utul ilma wal imana laqad labistum fi kitabil lahi ila yaumil basi fahaza yaumul basi wa lakin nakum kuntum la talamun

57So on that day no excuse of theirs will avail the transgressors nor will they be invited to seek grace.

58Verily, We have propounded for men in this Qur’an every kind of parable: but if you bring to them any sign, the unbelievers are sure to say “You do nothing but talk vanities.”

59Thus does Allah seal up the hearts of those who understand not.

60So patiently persevere: for verily, the promise of Allah is true: nor let those shake your firmness who have themselves no certainty of faith.
