Smoke (Ad-Dukhân)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

1H. M.

2By the book that makes things clear.

3We sent it down during a blessed night: for We wish to warn against evil.

4In that night is made distinct every affair of wisdom

5By command from Our presence. For We ever send revelations.

6As a mercy from your Lord: for He hears and knows all things;

7The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if you have an assured faith.

8There is no god but He: it is He who gives life and gives death, the Lord to you and your earliest ancestors.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

9Yet they play about in doubt.

10Then watch for the day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke or mist plainly visible.

11Enveloping the people: this will be a penalty grievous.

12“Our Lord! remove the penalty from us for We do really believe!”

13How shall the message be effectual for them seeing that an apostle explaining things clearly has come to them .

14Yet they turn away from him and say: “Tutored by others a man possessed!”

15We shall indeed remove the penalty for a while but truly you will revert to your ways.

16One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught, We will indeed exact retribution!

17We did before them try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them an apostle most honorable.

[Commentary continues below.]

18Saying: “Restore to me the servants of Allah: I am to you an apostle worthy of all trust;

19“And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest.

20“For me I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord against your injuring me.

21“And if you believe me not at least keep yourselves away from me.”

22Then he cried to his Lord: “These are indeed a people given to sin.”

23“March forth with My servants by night: for you are sure to be pursued.

24“And leave the sea as a furrow. For they are a host destined to be drowned.”

25How many were the gardens and springs they left behind.

26And corn fields and noble buildings.

27And wealth wherein they had taken such delight!

18An addu ila ya ibadal lah inni lakum rasulun amin

[Commentary continues below.]

28Thus was their end! And We made other people inherit those things!

29And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite again.1

30We did deliver before the Children of Israel from humiliating punishment

31Inflicted by Pharaoh for he was arrogant even among inordinate transgressors.

32And We chose them before above the nations knowingly.

33And granted them signs in which there was a manifest trial.

34As to these Quraish, they say forsooth:

35“There is nothing beyond our first death and we shall not be raised again.

36“Then bring our forefathers back if what you say is true!”

28Kazalika wa auratsnaha qauman akharin

29Fama bakat alaihimu samau walardu wa ma kanu munzarin

30Wa laqad najjaina bani Isra il minal azabil muhin

1. Basically they were not missed by anyone.

37What! are they better than the people of Tubba and those who were before them? We destroyed them because they were guilty of sin.

38And We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them merely in sport:

39We created them not except for just ends: but most of them do not understand.

40Verily, the day of sorting out is the time appointed for all of them

41The day when no protector can avail his client in anything and no help can they receive.

42Except such as receive Allah’s mercy: for He is exalted in might, most merciful.

43Verily, the tree of Zaqqum

44Will be the food of the sinful.

45Like molten brass; it will boil in their insides.

37Ahum khairun am qaumu tub baiw wal lazina min qablihim ahlaknahum in nahum kanu mujrimin

38Wa ma khalaqna samawati wal arda wa ma bainahuma laibin

39Ma khalaqnahuma illa bilhaqqi wa lakin na aksarahum la yalamun

40Inna yaumal fasli miqatuhum ajmain

41Yauma la yugni maulan am maulan sai awa la hum yunsarun

42Illa ma rahimal lah innahu huwal azizu rahim

43Inna syajarata zaqqum

44Taamul asim

45Kal muhli yagi fi butun

46Like the boiling of scalding water.

47“Seize him and drag him into the midst of the blazing fire!

48“Then pour over his head the penalty of boiling water;

49“Taste this! Truly were you mighty full of honor!

50“Truly this is what you used to doubt!”

51As to the righteous they will be in a position of security

52Among gardens and springs;

53Dressed in fine silk and in rich brocade they will face each other;

54So; and We shall join them to companions with beautiful big and lustrous eyes.

55There can they call for every kind of fruit in peace and security;

46Kaghalyil hamim

47Khuzuhu fatiluhu ila sawa il jahim

48Summa subu fauqa rasihi min azabil hamim

49Zuq innaka antal azizul karim

53Yalbasuna min sundusi wa istabraqi mutaqabilin

54Kazalika wa zawajnahum bihurin in

55Yaduna fiha bikul li fakihatin aminin

56Nor will they there taste death except the first death; and He will preserve them from the penalty of the blazing fire

57As a bounty from your Lord! That will be the supreme achievement!

58Verily, We have made this easy in your tongue in order that they may give heed.

59So wait and watch; for they too are waiting.

56La yazuquna fihal mauta illal mautatal ula wa waqahum azabal jahim

57Fadlam mi rabbik zalika huwal fauzul azim

58Fa innama ya sarnahu bilisanika laal lahum yataza karun

59Fai taqib innahum murtaqibun
