The Clot (Al-Alaq )

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.1

Proclaim in the name of your Lord who created

Created man out of a clot of congealed blood:2

Proclaim and your Lord is most bountiful

He who taught by the pen.

Taught man that which he knew not.

No, but man does transgress all bounds.

In that he looks upon himself as self sufficient.

Verily, to your Lord is the return (of all).

Do you see one who forbids.

A votary when he prays?

Do you see if He is on guidance?

Or enjoins righteousness?

Do you see if he denies and turns away?

1. It is interesting that this chapter is numbered 96 of the Qur’anic when its beginning verse was the first to be revealed to Muhammad on Mount Hira. This is what Yusuf Ali calls universal consent which gave approval to the current arrangement of the Qur’an (please refer to notes on chapter 1). How can the Qur’an then retain its divine arrangement in the light of this fact? Please refer to notes on Qur’an 1.

2. Genesis says that God created man from the dust of the earth. Once again, the Qur’an diverts from the text of the Bible.

Does he know not that Allah does see?

Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock.

A lying sinful forelock!

Then let him call to his council:

We will call on the angels of punishment!

No, heed him not: but bow down in adoration and bring yourself closer!
