In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.1
1Proclaim in the name of your Lord who created
2Created man out of a clot of congealed blood:2
3Proclaim and your Lord is most bountiful
4He who taught by the pen.
5Taught man that which he knew not.
6No, but man does transgress all bounds.
7In that he looks upon himself as self sufficient.
8Verily, to your Lord is the return (of all).
9Do you see one who forbids.
10A votary when he prays?
11Do you see if He is on guidance?
12Or enjoins righteousness?
13Do you see if he denies and turns away?

1Iqra bismi rabika lazi halaqa
2Halaka linsana min alaqi
3Iqra wa rabuka lakramu
4Alazi alama bil qalami
5Alama linsana ma lam yalam
6Kala inna linsana layatga
7Arra ahus tagna
8Inna ila rabbika ruja
9Araita lazi yanha
10Abdan iza sala
11Araita inkana alal huda
12Au amara bitaqwa
13Araita inkazaba wa tawala
1. It is interesting that this chapter is
numbered 96 of the Qur’anic when its beginning verse was the first to be
revealed to Muhammad on Mount Hira. This is what Yusuf Ali calls universal
consent which gave approval to the current arrangement of the Qur’an (please
refer to notes on chapter 1). How can the Qur’an then retain its divine
arrangement in the light of this fact? Please refer to notes on
